Artist's Description

"Unchained" combines Evelyn de Morgan's painting "Hope in the Prison of Despair" with a pose from Auguste Rodin's "Crouching Woman."

Evelyn de Morgan recognized, "Art is eternal, but life is shortI have not a moment to lose." And, mentored by her mother-in-lawa spiritualist and social activistde Morgan sought new heroines with which to construct original images of Victorian womanhood. Her "Hope in the Prison of Despair" preceded the first English suffragette society by a decade.
