Artist's Description

Jean-August-Dominique Ingres suffered frequent denunciations from critics. But many twentieth century artists credited him as a progenitor of their work. Indeed, the artist Willem de Kooning claimed, "None of us would have existed without him."

Certainly Ingres’ distortions of the human figure presaged modern art. According to experts, Ingres elongated the figure in "Large Odalisque" by five vertebrae.

Ironically, the Paris Salon charged Ingres with plundering the past because he borrowed freely from the work of earlier artists, adopting whatever historical style he considered the most appropriate to his subject.

(Excerpt from the book "Revisiting the Classics.")
