Artist's Description

A toll collector in Paris, Henri Rousseau did not start painting seriously until his early forties.

Critics condemned his work as childish. Stumbling upon one of Rousseau’s paintings being sold as canvas to be painted over, however, Pablo Picasso recognized the self-taught artist’s genius.

Rousseau’s inspiration came from books and the botanical gardens in Paris. He said, "When I go into the glass houses and I see the strange plants of exotic lands, it seems to me that I enter into a dream."

"The Dream" was his final painting.

(Excerpt from the book "Revisiting the Classics.")

About Don McCunn

Don McCunn

I am a photographer/costumer raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. I hold a BS in theatre from the University of Texas at Austin and an MA in theatre from UCSB. For me photography is theatre at 1/60th of a second. It gives me particular pleasure to work with talented models to create original imagery inspired by fine art that has been enjoyed for centuries.
