Artist's Description

John William Waterhouse's ''Echo and Narcissus'' depicts the unrequited lovers in Ovid's ''Metamorphosis.''

According to Ovid, the chatterbox Echo fell passionately in love with Narcissus, but he rejected her cruelly. Pining for him, Echo faded until only her voice remained. Then Narcissus, chancing upon his reflection in a pond, fell deeply in love. His attempts to draw the beautiful water spirit out of the pond were repeatedly thwarted, however, and he wasted away until he completely disappeared.
