Artist's Description
In painting an unclothed woman gazing at the viewer in Luncheon on the Grass, Edouard Manet was rebelling against the tradition of nude figures modeled on historical, mythical, or biblical themes.
When Paris Salon of 1863 refused to accept the painting, Manet submitted it to the Paris Salon des Refuses. Even displayed in a Salon for rejected work, however, the painting sparked controversy and engendered public notoriety.
The woman in the painting is a combination of Madame Manet’s body and the face of Victorine Meurent, who later established herself as an artist in her own right, becoming a member of the Societe des Artistes.
Meurent is the inspiration for The Conversation in which the woman is an active participant.
