Artist's Description

In Judgment of Paris, Lucas Cranach the Elder returned three times to a myth in which all the gods were invited to a wedding—with the exception of Eris, the goddess of discord.

Eris went anyway, and when she was turned away, she angrily cast a golden apple addressed "To the Fairest" into the assembly.

Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena each claimed the apple.
Zeus, asked to mediate, commanded Paris of Troy to decide the winner.
To sway his judgment, each goddess offered him a gift.

Paris couldn’t resist Aphrodite’s promise to give him the most beautiful woman, Helene, for a wife, and her subsequent abduction led to the Trojan War.
