Artist's Description

The "Amazonomachy Frieze" celebrates Heracles’ defeat of the Amazon queen Hypolita, and the slaughter of her followers. So it is not surprising that the victors have been depicted as heroic, the vanquished defensive, falling, or dead.

Renowned for their courage, however, the Amazons surely fought bravely even in face of certain defeat.
