Artist's Description

The son of two painters, John William Waterhouse studied at the Royal Academy of Art. His position as a member of the prestigious Royal Academy was secured by 'A Mermaid.'

Whether mermaids are real or mythological has been argued through the ages. In the first extant mermaid story, dating back to 1000 BC in Assyria, the goddess Atargatis loved a mortal shepherd whom she accidentally killed. Devastated, she leaped into a lake, whereupon she turned into a human above the waist, a fish below.

In 'Mermaids’ Lagoon,' a twenty-first century mermaid joins Waterhouse’s creation, perpetuating their mythology—or challenging it.
